So you have finally created your first website and don't know what to do next? Well this tutorial is for the absolute beginner. Lets start with the ftp client.

FTP client
Ftp, or file-transfer protocol, is a way of transferring your files to a website. Most are simple, for beginners, and others are not so easy to use.
A good example of a free ftp program is Coffee cup ftp.

Website hosting
You are also going to need a host. This is where you will upload your website. A good example is 50megs

50megs
[signup].
Final steps
Once you have the webspace, open your ftp client. Log in to "ftp.50megs.com" with your username and password.

YOU MUST NAME YOUR .htm or .html FILE INDEX.HTML! THIS STEP IS CRUCIAL!
Once you have your files ready, hit upload, exit our of your ftp program and goto
yourusernamedontcallityourusernameputyour50megsname.50megs.com and show your cool new websites to your friends.
Additional information
Do, under no circumstances, use tripod as a host. You will hate the banners.
Upload only your index.html file. It will search you computer for the images you put in you website so you don't want them miss-placed.

**cough** it doesn't have to be only htm, or html. others, such as .php, .shtml, .shtm, etc.. work to. although wyou really would only use does for specific applications, like dynamic sites. wink.gif

This isin't for those things but you have a point.

yea, i know. dry.gif also, may i consider changing the name. maby "how to upload your site yo 50megs.com", since its not like this all the time. (far from it actrully)

I also disagree with the 'crucial step.' Sure, many of the webpages are html or htm files, but not most of them, not even the majority. Like grim said, there are many different types of files, and if you write your entire website in only html you're going to regret it later. css, php, xml, and xsl are your friend. You said that this tutorial isn't for 'those things' but all of 'those things' are interconnected. Also, you don't want to confuse people by saying rename all your files to index.html. Any name will work, although you may want your 'main page' to be called index.

Also, I'm not familiar with the way CoffeeCup works, but on almost all FTP programs you have to load up any images and other pages you reference on your website. You might want to make a note that this tutorial is only for using coffeecup if this is indeed the case. If you want to read up some more on FTP clients, you can do so here

One last thing, I assume you meant to type don't, under any circumstance, use tripod. Except for the things mentioned above, good job on this tutorial.

Well I only meant for it to be in html. Sorry unsure.gif. This is just a basic refrence.
